David Aircraft Component Repair Frequently Asked Questions

David asks…

Ever had a puppy play pen?

I have a 10 week old Jack Russell terrier that needs a bigger crate/house/cage/whatever… anyway i have been looking at the Pet Gear Home ‘N Go Pet pen… has anybody ever used one.. is the small size good for Jr’s?? Thanks

admin answers:

The pet pens are great. They are like a child’s play pen. You can leave the dog in the pen while you are doing work and doing something where you can not watch the dog. It is also good for house training because it is similar to a crate. The dogs want to keep where the stay clean.

The small sized pen would be good for a jack russel. Medium sized would be great too.

Daniel Aircraft Component Repair Frequently Asked Questions

Daniel asks…

New Sun Conure coming home!?

We just picked out a sun conure and are bringing him home on Wednesday. Rather, he picked us out. He’s adorable and loud and we completely fell in love with him. I can’t stand a quiet house.

I’ve had a bird before–a cockatiel for 15 years. I completely adored him and I think he had a great life. He died a few years ago, and I miss him like crazy.

We’re going to take the new bird to the vet as soon as he’s in our care. He has a clean bill of health now, but we’d rather have our guy assess him. We are going to buy a big cage and toys and climbing gear for him before we bring him home. I’m reading up on the conure in general right now. We’ve got the time and energy to spend with him, no other pets or kids yet, and have people beating down our door to watch him when we need to be away for a few days. His diet seems to be the thing I’m having the hardest time learning, but I think we’ll get it.

My question is what else do we need to know? I want to be prepared and to give the little guy the best life possible.

admin answers:

Congratulations on your new bird! You already have some bird experience with your cockatiel; think of a conure as a couple of steps up from that. Conures can be quite loud, so keep that in mind. Their diet is a little bit different than cockatiels (conures tend to enjoy eating fruit more).

Also, sometimes conures can be prone to “conure bleeding syndrome” which causes them to bleed from the mouth or cloaca and appear very weak. It can be prevented by ensuring that the diet has adequate calcium and vitamin K. If you’re feeding a healthy and varied diet, you need not worry about this. A good quality seed blend (designed for small hookbills), with lots of fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains/legumes, etc is a good base to start off from. Be sure to sprinkle a powdered vitamin and mineral supplement on the produce (this is not necessary if you’re feeding pellets).

Richard Aircraft Component Repair Frequently Asked Questions

I was just wondering if everything on this list looks suitable for a Green cheek Conure?

Ok, just wondering if this supply list looks ok to you.

Pet Pocket Bird Carrier
HQ Flight Cage
Lixit Glass Water Bottle
Stainless Steel Cage Cups (Hang-On)
Manzita Perch (1 Medium Regular and One Small Multi-Branch)
Safety Pumice Perch (X-Small)
Sisal Twister (X-Large)
Aviator Harness and Leash
Bamboo Giraffe (Small)
Medium Stainless Steel Swing
Topaze
Rings of Fortune
Foraging System Starter Kit
Hanging Acrylic Toy: Gears
Teach Box and Bank (Medium)
Pinata

Everything is from Dr.Foster and Smith except for the Flight cage, which is from birds comfort.

admin answers:

I agree with most everything on the list. But I would get rid of the Aviator Harness and leash. (Its a bird NOT a dog!) Most birds hate them and they look silly!
I would get rid of the pumice perch too……its hurts their feet and gives them sores on their feet.
I would put a drip bowl under the water bottle so the bird can play in the water and take baths.
Just make sure the bar spacing in right on the cage and it looks like you are good to go.

Enjoy you new bird!
