Why wasn’t there aircraft carrier when the Pearl Harbor was attacked? Might Roosevelt have known in advance. Could someone tell me ?

Out of the seven US navy carriers only two were stationed at Pearl Harbor on dec. 7, 1941. Both the Lexington and Enterprise were delivering squadrons to Midway or Wake Island. In fact the Enterprise was due back at Pearl on the 6th but had been delayed by bad weather and had to refuel it’s destroyer escort.
The others, the Saratoga was on the West Coast while the other four (Hornet, Yorktown, Ranger and Wasp) were all part of the Atlantic fleet.
A side note about this is those squadrons being delivered to Wake and Midway were to help protect flights of B-17s going to the Philippines from the mainland US (stopping at certain airfields). In fact the first such flights arrived in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. But the invasion of Wake Island during the following week forced the US to abandon that plan.

Anyone knows about the positions on an aircraft carrier?
I’ve heard that people who give oil supply to an aircraft carrier wearing purple suits belong to ground service and don’t go with the ship when having a mission. Anyone knows this? Please be professional, I would like people who know us navy very well or actually have served to answer it. Thank you. And please check back for additional questions just in case.

Grapes are Aviation re fuelers. They are assigned to the carrier and get underway every time she does.
Think about it, howinhell do you expect the squadron to get gassed up while on deployment?!

What is the Best website to find accurate accounts of Aircraft Carrier Battles in WWII and their travels?
My Father was on the Aircraft Carriers Block Island and then the Guadalcanal.
I have not found anyplace to see the accounts of the WWII Carriers travels and exploits. Other than the Guadalcanal’s Capture of the German U-Boat.
open to any and all suggestions of course…

Try Wikipedia.com. That site has a lot of good info of stuff like that. I’ve done a lot of searching for things there including ww2 and it seemed to be helpful to me.

The new part of the aircraft carrier is being launched from Govan in Glasgow on Tuesday 16 August. Does anyone know what time it wll be at?

In 2011 a consortium of bussinessmen made a bid to buy the de-commissioned aircraft carrier the Ark Royal . They wanted to turn it into a tourist attraction. Did they succeed in their bid and if not what happened to it

I do not think so. I live nearby and there has been nothing in the Gib news. For a small place like Gib this would be major news, so its unlikely.
