I’m sure modern aircraft would have no trouble shooting down Mitsubishi Zeroes. But it was a surprise attack, and there were a lot of Zeroes, so we might not be able to get all of them. OTOH we would have satellites to see the fleet of Japanese aircraft carriers coming. So we would have been able to sink the carriers themselves before they came in range.

Aircraft carriers in those days were really just floating airstrips, part of a larger overall system of battleships, cruisers, destroyers, etc. Today aircraft carriers are our main military bases. We don’t use fighters as much as we used to, frankly because we don’t do fights in the air. We launch bombers from our aircraft carriers to strike targets on the ground. Plus carriers are only the center of a ‘carrier group’ of ships deployed miles away to protect the carrier. So if it was today the Japanese wouldn’t be striking at a fleet of battleships and other big, heavy ships in a harbor, they’d be striking at our aircraft carriers themselves.

Of course they wouldn’t have a chance of this with 1940s technology. They couldn’t get close enough to our aircraft carriers with their fighters to drop bombs or torpedoes. But today they’d have anti-ship cruise missiles that fly just a few feet off the water at supersonic speeds. And believe it or not, these weapons have never been tested against US aircraft carriers, and some experts think they might even work. Iran has quite a few of these missiles and I’ve read some ‘experts’ believe they actually could sink a US aircraft carrier, and that’s why GW Bush wasn’t able to attack Iran as he wanted to.

If they’re protected anything like we protect ours, it would be very difficult.

The only plausible way I see this happening in the open sea would be to launch them from a submarine underwater…but if there are hunter-killer submarines patrolling the area, it would be very difficult to do this without being detected. A submarine is always part of our carrier battle group…just to keep those pesky enemy submarines away.

During deployment of the SEALs, the submarine would be very vulnerable should someone try and attack it. Plus, doing so makes some noise I’m sure…if a submarine were to hear the noises from the airlock or whatever, I’m sure that would put them on alert for something fishy going on.

Ah, 0bama. Bush won us the Iraq War after the Iraqis attacked us on 9/11. He then hunted down Saddam Hussein, who was one of the terrorist pilots. When 0bama snuck into office, he re-started the Iraq War after we had already won it, just so we could lose it. Then he made the troops leave and made it look like a surrender. Cheney tried to warn us, but no one would listen to his wisdom. 0bama tried the same thing in Libya, but the troops won the war despite 0bama. 0bama got really mad and raised the debt ceiling. It would not surprise me if 0bama sends the troops back to Libya and makes them surrender.

Also, did you know the 2012 election is being moved to Christmas day? Because 0bama and the Dems hate Christmas and only want people who don’t celebrate Christmas to vote in 2012.
